LANDS BELONGING TO TAMILS IN THE NORTH SEIZED BY GOVERNMENT

09 August 2010, 4811 acres of lands in Mullaithivu and Killinochchi Districts traditionally owned by Tamil people have been seized by the government to settle 100,000 Army families.

The government has seized 4000 acres at Thirumurukandi and Indupuram area in Mullaithivu and 801 acres at Araliyanagar and Punnanagar areas in Killinochchi District. It is reported that residents in these areas are still languishing in refugee camps.

Despite 281 families from refugee camps arriving at Thirumurukandi area for resettling, Army personnel had chased them away stating they had no permission to settle down in the area. As a result 980 people belonging to 281 of these families are staying at Shanthipuram Vidyalaya say reports.
